What is the difference between IV sedation and general anesthesia?
IV sedation and general anesthesia differ in depth and administration:
IV Sedation (Conscious Sedation): - "Twilight" state - Technically conscious - Can respond to commands - Breathe on your own - Little to no memory - Faster recovery - Given by dentist
General Anesthesia: - Completely unconscious - Cannot be awakened - Cannot respond - Breathing may need assistance - No awareness whatsoever - Longer recovery - Requires anesthesiologist
When each is used:
IV Sedation (most dental procedures): - Implants - Wisdom teeth - Complex extractions - Long procedures - Anxious patients
General Anesthesia: - Very long/complex surgeries - Patients who cannot cooperate - Severe special needs - Cases requiring complete stillness - Failed IV sedation
Cost and logistics: - IV sedation: Done in office, lower cost - General: Hospital/surgery center, higher cost
For most dental procedures, IV sedation provides excellent comfort with faster recovery and lower cost than general anesthesia.
