What should I expect after sedation?
After sedation, here's what to expect:
Immediately after: - Groggy and sleepy - Unsteady walking (assistance needed) - May not remember leaving office - Speech may be slurred - Time feels distorted
First few hours: - Rest at home - Drowsiness continues - May drift in and out of sleep - Some nausea possible (usually mild) - Gradually become more alert
By evening: - Much more alert - Can eat soft foods - May still feel tired - Minor grogginess
Next day: - Usually feel normal - May be slightly tired - Can resume normal activities - No driving until fully alert
Important guidelines: - Responsible adult must drive you home - Someone should stay with you for 4-6 hours - No driving for 24 hours - No alcohol for 24 hours - Take medications as directed - Call us if anything seems wrong
Most patients say they feel "pleasantly foggy" and are surprised how quickly they feel normal again.
