What is bone grafting and do I need it for implants?
Bone grafting is a procedure that adds bone material to areas of the jaw that have deteriorated, creating a solid foundation for dental implants.
You may need bone grafting if: - You've had missing teeth for a long time - You have bone loss from gum disease - Your sinus is too close to the upper jaw (sinus lift) - A tooth was extracted traumatically
Types of bone grafts: - Socket preservation (at time of extraction) - Ridge augmentation (adds width/height) - Sinus lift (adds bone below the sinus)
Bone graft sources: - Synthetic bone material (most common) - Your own bone - Donor bone
The grafting procedure is often done at the same time as implant placement. Healing typically takes 3-6 months. Modern techniques and materials have made bone grafting routine and predictable.
3D imaging at your consultation will determine if grafting is needed for your case.
