Are dental X-rays safe?
Dental X-rays are very safe with minimal radiation:
Radiation comparison (approximate): - 4 bitewing X-rays: 0.005 mSv - Panoramic X-ray: 0.01 mSv - Chest X-ray: 0.1 mSv - Daily background radiation: 0.01 mSv - Cross-country flight: 0.03 mSv
Digital X-rays are even safer: - 80% less radiation than film - Instant results (no retakes) - Enhanced images for better diagnosis - Environmentally friendly (no chemicals)
Safety measures we use: - Lead apron with thyroid collar - Digital technology - Only X-rays that are necessary - Follows ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable)
Who should avoid X-rays: - Pregnant women (we delay unless urgent) - Young children (minimize exposure) - Even then, dental X-rays are very low risk
The real risk is NOT taking X-rays: - Missed cavities between teeth - Undetected bone loss - Hidden infections - Problems caught late = more treatment
The diagnostic benefits far outweigh the minimal radiation exposure.
