What age should my child first visit the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends:
First visit timing: - By age 1, OR - Within 6 months of first tooth - Whichever comes first
Why so early? - Establish dental home - Catch problems early - Get guidance on care - Child becomes comfortable - Prevent early childhood cavities
First visit includes: - Gentle exam of teeth and gums - Check development - Cleaning if appropriate - Fluoride if needed - Parent education
What we discuss: - Brushing technique - Teething - Thumb sucking/pacifier - Diet and cavity prevention - Fluoride recommendations
Making it positive: - Keep visit upbeat - Don't project your own fears - Use positive language - Praise their bravery - Make it routine
Schedule by age: - Age 1: First visit - Ages 1-3: Every 6 months - Ages 3+: Regular 6-month checkups
Early visits prevent problems and create positive associations with dental care that last a lifetime.
