What causes sensitive teeth and how can I treat it?
Tooth sensitivity has several possible causes:
Common causes: - Worn tooth enamel - Gum recession (exposed roots) - Cavities - Cracked teeth - Teeth grinding - Recent dental work - Acidic foods/drinks - Aggressive brushing
Treatment options:
At-home care: - Desensitizing toothpaste (Sensodyne, etc.) - Soft-bristled toothbrush - Gentle brushing technique - Fluoride rinse - Avoid very hot/cold foods temporarily
In-office treatments: - Fluoride varnish application - Desensitizing agents - Bonding to cover exposed roots - Gum grafting (severe recession) - Night guard (if grinding) - Treat underlying decay
When to see us: - Sensitivity lasting more than a few days - Pain when biting - Severe or sudden sensitivity - Sensitivity in one specific tooth - Visible chips or cracks
Prevention: - Use soft toothbrush - Don't brush too hard - Limit acidic foods and drinks - Wear night guard if you grind - Regular dental checkups
Sensitivity is common and treatable. Let us know at your next visit so we can identify the cause.
