Does Invisalign hurt?
Invisalign is generally much more comfortable than traditional braces, but some discomfort is normal:
What to expect: - Pressure/tightness with new aligners (first 2-3 days) - Mild soreness that fades quickly - Tenderness when biting initially - Most discomfort subsides by day 3-4
Pain compared to braces: - No sharp brackets or wires - No poking or cutting - More gradual, gentle pressure - Most patients say "uncomfortable, not painful"
Managing discomfort: - Change aligners before bed - Over-the-counter pain reliever if needed - Chew on a Chewie to seat aligners - Cold water can soothe - Discomfort means teeth are moving!
When discomfort is NOT normal: - Sharp, severe pain - Pain lasting more than a week - Aligners cutting gums - Teeth extremely sensitive
These should be reported. Minor adjustments can usually resolve any issues.
Most patients adapt quickly and barely notice their aligners after the first few days of each set.
